How your septic system is supposed to handle water
In a healthy system, wastewater leaves your home, solids settle in the tank, and the liquid (effluent) flows out to the drain field, where the surrounding soil absorbs and filters it back into the ground. Don't rush to pump the tank in the middle of a flood either; if the surrounding ground is fully saturated, an empty tank can actually float or shift.
